Rod Wipers

Key Training Point

Always identify whether the heel is solid or slotted — slotted heels prevent pressure traps between wiper and rod seal. Check lip count (single vs double) before ordering.

Rod Seals

📐

Measurement

Most U-cup rod seals measure c.s. / i.d. / o.d. / hgt. Buffer seals measure i.d., o.d., and overall hgt. CAT-specific seals use housing dimensions — confirm whether listed dimension is seal or housing.

Category C

Symmetrical Seals

🔄

Training Note

Symmetrical seals work on both rod and piston. PolyPak® family measures cs / i.d. / o.d. / hgt. Last 4 digits in Type B part numbers identify the material.

Piston Seals

📏

Key Training Point

Piston seals measure o.d. / i.d. / hgt. — OD listed first. PTFE piston rings are solid outer rings loaded with a square tetra seal expander. Iron rings come in many cut types — confirm cut before ordering.

DU Bearing Note

When measuring DU bearings, never scratch the PTFE inner layer with caliper points. Measure ID, OD, and height only when bearing is fully closed.

Verification Checklist

For every O-ring always verify: i.d., cross section, material, and durometer. For kits, also check box label and quantity. For cord styles, verify the correct profile (O-ring, quad, or square).

i.d.
Inner Diameter
The bore or rod dimension the seal contacts internally.
o.d.
Outer Diameter
The housing or bore dimension the seal contacts externally.
c.s.
Cross Section
Width of the seal ring itself, measured radially.
hgt.
Height
Axial length of the seal from face to face.
T
Thickness
Used for back-up rings; same as cross section.
1st hgt.
First / Base Height
The shorter face on multi-height wipers or seals.
2nd hgt.
Second / Overall Height
The taller face or total assembly height.
duro.
Durometer (Shore)
Hardness rating; most seals are 70A–95A. Always check.

Wipers — what to measure

Identify: i.d., o.d., base height (1st hgt.), and whether the heel is open or closed. Note lip count. For steel-cased types, also confirm the canning height.

U-cup rod seals

Measure: c.s., i.d., o.d., and hgt. For BS-style seals: i.d. + 2 c.s. = o.d. is a useful check. Unloaded seals are measured without a spring.

Piston seals — OD first

OD is always listed first in piston seal part numbers. Measure o.d., i.d., and hgt. For multi-piece designs, note each component height separately.

PTFE solid outer rings

Measure the outer ring: o.d., i.d., and hgt./cs. The expander size is listed separately in catalog. Never crush or overtighten during measurement.

Common Seal Materials

Material selection affects compatibility, temperature range, and fluid resistance. Always confirm with the customer's application data.

Polyurethane
AU 90A · AU 92A · AU 93A · AU 94A
High abrasion resistanceExcellent wear lifeGood oil resistance

The most common seal elastomer at Fluidseal. Different durometer grades control hardness and sealing force. 94A is harder — used for higher-pressure buffer applications.

Nitrile
NBR · 70A · 80A · 80/90A · 90A
Petroleum fluid compatibleWide temperature rangeCost-effective

Standard elastomer for petroleum-based hydraulic fluids. Carboxylated Nitrile (XNBR) adds improved abrasion resistance.

PTFE
BR.PTFE · GF.PTFE · V.PTFE
Very low frictionChemical resistantWide temp range

Bronze-filled (BR.PTFE) and Glass-filled (GF.PTFE) grades add strength and wear resistance. Used in high-performance piston and rod seals where low friction is critical.

Fluorocarbon
FKM · Viton®
High temperatureChemical resistantAggressive fluids

Used where nitrile is incompatible — high temperatures, aggressive chemicals, phosphate ester fluids. Confirm application before substituting.

Nylon / Polyamide
PA · GF.Nylon
Anti-extrusionWear ringsStructural

Glass-filled nylon used for wear rings and anti-extrusion rings. Common in multi-piece piston seals (TP, P2G, CTS, P4A).

Neo-Fabric
Neoprene fabric
FlexibleSplit-to-diameterVee packings

Fabric-reinforced neoprene. Primary material for vee packing center rings and certain piston seals (CF, P3C). Can be split to almost any diameter for vee coil applications.
